Read BioWith more than thirty years of experience as a family and sports medicine physician, Dr. Rice is a premier medical expert on wellness, both in the United States and internationally. Dr. Rice earned his B.S. degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and received his D.O. degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (now A.T. Still University). He completed his internship and Family Medicine residency in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps. Currently he is board-certified in Family Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine; he is also a Diplomat of the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine. Dr. Rice’s passion is to facilitate positive life transformations through education and inspiration. A committed family man, he is father to two beautiful daughters, is a proud grandfather, and resides in Point Loma with his beloved wife, Mary, dog Hugs, and Maine coon cat Yogi.
Geoff Lange

Read BioRaised in Modesto, CA, Dr. Lange is a long-time fan of the Sacramento Kings and is also a 49ers fan. Dr. Lange completed his undergraduate education at Brigham Young University, with a degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Chemistry. After graduation, Dr. Lange had the opportunity to serve on a 2-year mission for his church in Mongolia. As a result, he is fluent in Mongolian! After his mission, he studied medicine at Touro University California, then went on to residency in Family Medicine at Kaweah Delta Medical Center in Visalia, CA. Dr. Lange completed his medical training with a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Eisenhower Health in the Palm Desert. A special interest in golf led Dr. Lange to pursue TPI certification from the Titleist Performance Institute which has increased his knowledge of golf swing mechanics, pitfalls, and injuries that occur in the sport. When not at work, or on the golf course, you can find Dr. Lange enjoying time spent with his wife and two children.
Kristen Manecke

Read BioKristen was raised in Prairie Village, KS and attended The University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS for undergraduate school with a BA in Psychology in 1994. She then went on to receive her BS in Occupational Therapy from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1999. Kristen moved to San Diego in 2002 and became a Certified Hand Therapist in 2004, joining the ranks of less than 7,000 CHT’s worldwide. Kristen brings with her over 20 years of hand therapy experience, and is highly skilled in treatments of all upper extremity disorders including orthopaedic injuries, neurological conditions, and complex trauma. With her background as an occupational therapist, Kristen specializes in customizing treatment plans to the specific daily needs of her clients. She is proficient in fabricating custom made splints/orthotics, providing manual therapy techniques such as massage and instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, as well as using a variety of pain relieving electrical and thermal modalities, and kinesiotape. When she is not at work, Kristen enjoys life with her husband at home or traveling. They love the outdoors, working on home projects, and wine tasting.
Shawn Renner

Read BioShawn received his Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences with a Minor in Business in 2013 from the University of Missouri-Columbia. While a Mizzou Tiger, Shawn worked as a student athletic trainer for the wrestling team and spent time volunteering in pediatrics with a hippotherapy program. Upon graduation and moving to Atlanta, GA he worked as a physical therapy aide for Atlanta’s largest orthopaedic group and continued volunteering with pediatrics in hippotherapy. Shawn graduated from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL as a Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2017. Shawn has been living in San Diego since 2016 where he completed his clinical work in a variety of settings including Scripps Mercy Hospital for inpatient care with focus in trauma and orthopaedics. Shawn’s passion for sports medicine and orthopaedics returned him to the outpatient setting where he enjoys working with a variety of patients of all activity levels and goals to return function and performance. Outside of the therapy gym, Shawn enjoys travelling, camping, picking up sand volleyball matches in OB, and if caught outside the house you will likely meet his French Bulldog, Piglet catching some sun.
Amanda Montie

Read BioAmanda earned her Bachelors degree in Kinesiology from San Diego State University in 2009. She then went on to obtain her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in 2012. Since graduating Amanda has worked in all Physical Therapy settings but has found a true passion for outpatient orthopedics, manual therapy and assessment and treatment of TMJ dysfunction and pain. In her free time, Amanda enjoys going to the beach, hiking or spending time with family and friends.

Read BioMackenzie was born and raised in southeast Virginia where she received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Roanoke College, 2015. She moved to San Diego in June 2015 where she received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy, with high honors, from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in April 2018. As a board Certified Athletic Trainer, she had the opportunity to perform on and off the field athlete evaluations, perform pre-season concussion screenings, develop sport specific interventions and participate in injury prevention programs. During her undergraduate career, she worked as a student athletic trainer for a variety of collegiate and high school sports teams including: soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey, baseball and basketball. As an athlete herself, she understands the determination, work ethic and drive to achieve one’s goals. Mackenzie has a passion for treating the orthopedic, sport and pediatric populations. Mackenzie utilizes evidence based research to create a multi-modal evaluation and treatment approach providing individualized care to work towards her patient’s goals, to restore their functional mobility, to get them back to their sport and to provide injury prevention education. Her clinical experience includes orthopedics, pediatrics, sports rehabilitation, vestibular rehabilitation with an emphasis on vertigo treatment and concussion management. In addition to being a Clinical Instructor to physical therapy students on internship, she strives to be a lifelong learner throughout her career by completing continuing education courses in various areas of interests to better treat her patients. When she is out of the clinic, you can find her at the beach with her dog, exploring the gems of San Diego and trying new recipes in the kitchen, baking is her second passion.

He graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1984 and completed his sports medicine fellowship at San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center in 1987. Dr. Parker is board certified in family medicine with added qualifications in sports medicine. He was a swimmer at Springfield College and has served as a team physician for San Diego State University Athletics since 1985.

Dr. Anthony is board certified in family medicine with added qualifications in sports medicine. He is a team physician for the US Olympic Training Center, San Diego State University club sports, San Diego Christian College, Cuyamaca College, and Santa Fe Christian High School. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and adjunct professor at SDSU. He has served on many boards, including the Governor’s Board for Alvarado Hospital Medical Center, and the San Diego Academy of Family Practice. He has been the team physician for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) and the Million Dollar Ride since 2007. Dr. Anthony was voted among America’s Best Family Medicine Doctors by the Consumers’ Research Council of America and as one of San Diego Top Doctors for multiple years.

He graduated from Amherst College and the University of Virginia School of Medicine before completing his residency and fellowship training at UCSD. Dr. Ralph is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCSD School of Medicine and is board certified in family practice with added qualifications in sports medicine. He was a former president of the San Diego Academy of Family Physicians and is on the board of directors of the California Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Ralph has been voted among San Diego’s “Top Doctors” in family medicine and sports medicine by his peers through the San Diego County Medical Society. Dr. Ralph was just inducted as the president of the California Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP), a coveted and honorable position for family practitioners in the state of California. CAFP has a membership of over 10,000 physicians in California, and is the largest chapter of the AAFP, the national organization. Dr. Richburg is board certified in Family Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine. Dr. Richburg is the Head Team Physician at the U.S. Olympic Training Site in Chula Vista. He is also the Director of Athletic Medicine for the San Diego State University Aztecs. He is the Clinical Director of the SDSM Peak Performance Program, Skin Wellness Program, and the Sorrento Valley office. Dr. Richburg’s other clinical interests include youth sports care, concussion care, cycling medicine, and martial arts of all disciplines. Lastly, he has been voted by his peers as one of San Diego’s Top Doctors in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine for multiple years.

Read BioDr. O’Bryan was born and raised in Indianapolis, IN. She attained her BS degree at Indiana University in 2006 and was also a member of the women’s varsity soccer team. She graduated from Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2013, then completed her family medicine residency at Advocate Illinois Masonic in Chicago in 2016. Dr. O’Bryan is board certified in family medicine by both the AOA and AMA. When she moved to San Diego, she worked both for Kaiser in primary care and for UCSD in student health for 2 years before beginning her fellowship at San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center in July 2018. Dr. O’Bryan has a special interest in preventative medicine, sports medicine and procedures, and women’s health. In her spare time, she can be found on her yoga mat or with her family enjoying all the outdoor activities San Diego has to offer.

Read BioDr. Choi received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, San Diego in Human Biology, with a minor in music. He attended medical school at A.T. Still University, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona, and his internship was at Nassau University Medical Center in New York. Dr. Choi completed his residency at Dignity Health Northridge Family Medicine Program, an affiliate of UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, and he served as chief resident at Dignity during the last year of his residency. In 2018, he began a combined sports medicine fellowship at UCSD/SDSM. Dr. Choi is originally from Orange County, CA, and he enjoys playing and watching football, practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, snowboarding, cooking, and spending time with his wife.

Read BioDr Williams completed her Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Washington, Seattle in July 2018 and joined the SDSM practice in August 2018. She earned her DO degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency from Lankenau Medical Center, in Philadelphia, PA. She is currently board certified in Internal Medicine and with an added certificate of qualification in Sports Medicine. Dr Williams is a team physician at San Diego State University, Point Loma University, and La Jolla Country Day School. She also works closely with University of San Diego. She enjoys covering other high level sports team in the area including Legion, a profession rugby team (along with Dr. Rodriguez and Dr. Myers). She also provides medical game coverage for the Surfers (a Women’s Premier League rugby team) and the Old Aztecs, a Rugby Football League team. Dr. Williams holds particular interest in sports cardiology, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and regenerative medicine, including platelet rich plasma (PRP).

She graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and is board certified in family medicine and obesity medicine, with added qualifications in sports medicine. Dr. Look serves on the Board of Directors for the American Heart Association San Diego Chapter and was the National Medical Director for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk for several years. She was a team physician for the United States 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, and 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. She is currently a staff physician for the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista and a team physician for the USA Men’s and Women’s Rugby Sevens Team. Dr. Rodriguez also serves on the CA ACOFP Board and AOASM Board of Directors, and she is on many National ACOFP Committees. She is the company physician for the San Diego Ballet, The Academy of Performing Arts of San Diego, and The San Diego Symphony. She participates in team coverage for the California Ballet, San Diego State University Athletics, San Diego Surge Women’s Football, and the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. Dr. Rodriguez started her own non-profit organization called the LatinaStrong Foundation to help Latina women shape their culture through healthy diet and exercise to prevent disease. Dr. Rodriguez is honored to currently serve a 3-year term on the US President’s Council Science Board for Fitness, Sport, and Nutrition. He is currently a team physician for San Diego State University Athletics and the US Olympic Training Center. Read BioDr. Cheffet joined San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center in June 2013. After completing her undergraduate studies at University of California, Davis, she attended medical school at Western University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Pursuing her love of both pediatric and adult medicine, she completed a combined residency in pediatrics and internal medicine at Loma Linda University in 2006. She obtained board certification in both specialties. Her career has spanned a variety of interests, which started with her serving for four years as a medical director of a San Diego County community health center system. Her clinical experience has included treating critically ill hospitalized patients at Sharp Memorial Hospital, as well as caring for newborn babies at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns. Bringing her pediatric and internal medicine training to our team, she enhances our philosophy of quality care for the entire family. In 2016, Dr. Cheffet was nominated for the San Diego County Medical Society Top Doctors for Pediatrics.
Alexandra R. Myers

Read BioDr. Myers finished her Sports Medicine Fellowship with San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center (SDSM) in July 2014 and joined our practice as a full-time provider on August 1, 2014. Previously, she obtained a BA in Biology and Spanish at Cornell College. She then earned DO and MSHS degrees at Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, where she also did an Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship in osteopathic manipulative medicine. Dr. Myers completed her family medicine residency at Downey Regional Medical Center in 2013. She is board certified in family medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment, with a Certificate of Added Qualification in sports medicine. Dr. Myers is the Director of Women’s Athletic Medicine at San Diego State University, and the Team Physician for Santa Fe Christian High School. She also works extensively with San Diego Christian College, Cuyamaca College, and San Diego City College. In addition, she works with USA Rugby, is the Co-Medical Director of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk (along with Dr. Becca Rodriguez), and is the Medical Director for the Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon. She is bilingual in Spanish, and she volunteers annually on medical missions to Mexico with Liga International and to Haiti with Global Health Teams. Read BioCathy is happy to have joined the staff at San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center as a Registered Physical Therapist. Cathy’s accomplishments include: a BS of Physical Therapy, an MS of Athletic Training, a BS of Physical Education, being a Fellow of Applied Functional Science (FAFS) Functional Manual Reaction (FMR), and being a former Certified Athletic Trainer. Cathy grew up in Orange, CT and was athletically involved from a very young age in gymnastics, dance, field hockey, and track. While working on her first bachelor’s degree, she was also on the Varsity Cross Country Track team. She continued as a Women’s Cross Country and Track Field Assistant Coach while working on her Master’s Degree in Athletic Training. Subsequently, Cathy began a career as an Athletic Trainer for Yale University in New Haven, CT. It was there that she became interested in physical therapy, which resulted in her going back to college to get her second BS in Physical Therapy while working as an Athletic Trainer at the University of New Haven. Cathy then followed her dreams of living and working in paradise by moving to San Diego. Cathy’s 30 years of professional experience include working in outpatient orthopedic settings with specialized developed skills in treating multisport endurance athletes and post-surgical patients, and working with Saint Augustine in addition to Mission Bay High School caring for their football teams as an athletic trainer. Cathy also has experience teaching aquatic therapy, Pilates, and balance and fall prevention classes, as well as developing and presenting workshops and seminars and educating DPT candidates as a Clinical Instructor. Cathy recently became certified in 3DMAPS (3-Dimensional Movement Analysis Performance Systems) used to effectively assess mobility and stability in patients and clients. Early in her physical therapy career, Cathy was introduced to Gary Gray, PT, who is the forefather of the system of Applied Functional Science which she found to be consistent with her goals of combining manual techniques, movement re-education, and prescribed exercises in order to have patients return to an active, healthy, and enjoyable lifestyle. Besides teaching balance and fall prevention to seniors at the Rancho Santa Fe Senior Center, during her free time, Cathy takes full advantage of what she calls “God’s little corner of heaven on earth” that is San Diego. Cathy can be found running, cycling, weight training, and hiking in any given week. She looks forward to sharing her passion and knowledge with the local beach community.

Read Bio“In September of 2010, I suffered a cardiac arrest while playing tennis. This has changed my approach toward preventative care in general and especially prevention of cardiac disease. The knowledge that I gained from my personal experience is passed along to my patients in the daily treatment and discussions about risk factors for cardiac disease. As a sports medicine physician, I have always encouraged my patients to be active. I believe that we have the best approach to keeping you active and getting you back to activity as quickly as possible when you are injured. It is our goal to provide the highest level of care for all of your medical needs. When you do need further care we are here to guide the way and get you to the right specialist.” Dr. Anderson went to medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Following graduation in 1984, he did an internship in Pinellas Park, FL. After serving 4 years as an Army physician, he moved to San Diego and completed a sports medicine fellowship at San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center. He is board certified in family practice with a subspecialty in sports medicine. Dr. Anderson has provided primary care in Pacific Beach since 1989. He is currently the Medical Director for SeaWorld San Diego. He is also the team physician for the University of San Diego and Mission Bay High School, as well as the tournament physician for the BNP Paribas Open Tennis Tournament in Indian Wells and the La Costa Women’s Professional tennis tournament. Dr. Anderson also serves on the faculty of several medical schools and provides training for medical students at our medical center. He has been the team physician for the San Diego Gulls, the Buick Open golf tournament, and various other sporting events such as the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon. In addition, he was on staff at Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital in the Sports Medicine Clinic. Dr. Anderson and his wife Sandy enjoy playing many sports, especially tennis. He loves spending free time with his dogs, family, and friends. He is also very active in his church community.
David E. LaRue

Read BioAfter being raised in southern California, Dr. LaRue received his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. While there, he earned the honor of Student-Athlete All American NCAA Division 2 in basketball. He received his medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, in Pomona, CA in 1990. He spent one year at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital where the superb, rigorous training earned him a spot in the Kaiser Fontana Family Medicine Residency, the first DO to do so. In 1993, he graduated and became board certified in family medicine. Dr. LaRue then joined the San Diego Kaiser Medical Group, and after practicing for 30 years in family medicine, he is excited to have joined the urgent care group at SDSM in 2019. Dr. LaRue has extensive experience to offer patients expert diagnosis and treatment for all their urgent care needs, and his goal is to provide this in a timely fashion. He considers it an honor and a privilege to engage in the doctor-patient relationship. When Dr. LaRue is away from the clinic, he spends time playing guitar, backpacking, cycling, and writing. He has a special interest in philosophical theory and mindfulness training. He is married and has 2 adult sons.

Read Bio“My motto is ‘I treat patients the way I would want somebody to take care of a beloved family member.’ My personal style includes getting to know my patients a bit over time, helping them through the illnesses that may come their way, or seeing them for their annual exam year after year. Being a patient advocate is also an aspect of caring for patients that I enjoy. Often patients or their families need help navigating through the maze of healthcare, and I like to be able to lend that helping hand as well. I enjoy seeing women of all ages for their female health needs, including annual exams, STD testing and treatment, contraception, and health maintenance. For 12 years she worked as an ER and ICU RN at various teaching hospitals across the US. In 1999, she earned her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of San Diego. She is a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, licensed by the State of California, and has full prescribing licensure. Tess has worked in family practice and urgent care throughout her NP career, served as Clinical Faculty at USD, and is currently Clinical Faculty at San Diego State School of Nursing, College of Health and Human Services. She has 19 years of experience as an NP, 12 in urgent care settings. When not at work, Tess enjoys spending time with her family, ocean activities, cycling, traveling, and gardening.

Read BioEmily received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Indiana University in 2001 and has since worked in a variety of settings as an RN, including in the ER and urgent care settings. She received her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from California State University, Dominguez Hills, in 2011. Her area of academic concentration was Family Nurse Practitioner. Since graduation, she has continued to practice in the ER, has spent months working aboard a ship, and joined Anderson Medical Center in 2016 before it merged with San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center, where she continues to practice at the Pacific Beach Urgent Care location. “While practicing in the ER and retaining my love for treating acutely ill and injured individuals, I have also discovered the amazing benefits and professional satisfaction that comes with establishing patient relationships in the urgent care/primary care setting. I engage in preventative healthcare education as part of my daily practice, and I enjoy working with patients as a team to find the most safe and effective (and hopefully least invasive) treatment for their acute or chronic issues. I am a strong advocate for complementary medicine, which can be utilized in conjunction with the traditional medical model to achieve the best possible outcome for my patients.”

Read BioKatie grew up in Baltimore, MD where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Salisbury University in 2003. After working for 4 years in various emergency departments and other facilities in the Baltimore area, she moved to San Diego where she worked in mostly ER and urgent care settings as a registered nurse. After returning to school, she received her Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of San Diego in 2013 and became a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She began her NP career at Miramar College and in the Emergency Department at Scripps Mercy Hospital. She was excited to return to Anderson Medical Center (AMC) in 2014, before it merged with San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center (SDSM), after being at AMC as an NP student. Since that time, Katie has continued to work in family practice, urgent care, and emergency room settings. She has acted as a preceptor for upcoming NP students and will soon be joining the adjunct faculty at University of San Diego in the Emergency Nurse Practitioner program. “During my career, I have grown to appreciate the relationships built between myself and patients in the primary care setting. I work to act as an advocate for my patients and their health. I appreciate the benefit of complementary therapies and attempt to empower my patients through proper health education and realistic expectations. As a previous college athlete, and someone who still participates in athletic competition, I appreciate the knowledge and insight my colleagues at SDSM are able to provide to me and my patients in order to provide the highest level of care. Read BioEmily Maxwell, PA-C is a Portland, Oregon native and has been in Southern California since 2004. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Occidental College in Los Angeles in 2008 and enjoyed a career in advertising before pursuing her passion for medicine. Prior to Physician Assistant school, Emily worked as a Medical Assistant at the former Anderson Medical Center, now San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center – Urgent Care (SDSM) for two years. She loved the experience at the practice and knew that developing relationships with families would be her passion as a PA. She attended Midwestern University in Arizona, graduating at the top of her class with a Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies in 2017, before coming back to San Diego to begin her career. She is thrilled to be back at SDSM as a provider, working with the same patients and families and developing relationships with new ones every day. In her free time, Emily loves to run, hike, and travel with her husband and her Labrador Retriever, Goose.
Chad Neubrand

Read BioChad is the Director of Physical Therapy for San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center. He received his Master of Science in physical therapy from the University of Iowa and has been practicing physical therapy since 1992, specializing in manual therapy and functional exercise. Chad’s other specialties include foot biomechanics and custom orthotics, as well as writing and administering specific rehabilitation protocols for post-op hip and shoulder surgeries. He is currently a guest lecturer at San Diego State University Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program. Chad and his wife Elizabeth have traveled throughout the world and now reside in Kensington with their two boys.
Doreen Hall

Read BioDoreen has been practicing physical therapy since 1989. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy from Quinnipiac University and moved to San Diego where she started her career. Doreen has a diverse background in physical therapy with emphasis in manual therapy. Her clinical experience includes sports and orthopedic rehab, prenatal and postpartum rehab, work with seniors and osteoporosis, and much more. She has been teaching Pilates since 1999 and has found that it is an invaluable tool for integrating awareness and facilitating the body’s innate ability to heal through movement. Doreen especially enjoys helping patients with back pain through an exercise system she has been developing over the past several years in her Pilates practice. Doreen owned and operated Pilates People with her husband Dave Hall for 15 years. She completed the Polestar Pilates training in 1998 with Brent Anderson and Elizabeth Larkam and continues to explore the use of the Pilates principles in all her treatments. She enjoys the diversity of working with clients of all ages to improve their quality of life.
Joseph Mahon

Read BioJoseph received his Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences in Pittsburgh, PA. After receiving his degree, he went on to complete a post professional residency to specialize in sports physical therapy at the University of Delaware. During this time, he worked with a variety of athletes at the Division 1 level as well as many recreational athletes. Joseph is an APTA-certified clinical instructor and has instructed physical therapy students both in the classroom and clinic settings. Prior to receiving his DPT, he graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Rehabilitation Science. Joseph provides physical therapy services to sports and orthopedic patients with a strong focus on the latest evidence-based practice and manual therapy techniques. While specializing in sports physical therapy, Joseph received extensive training in the specialized field of concussion management and rehabilitation, which continues to be a primary focus of his practice.

Living and working in San Diego since then, her specialties include manual orthopedic skills learned through continuing education as well as aquatic therapy, TMJ, and women’s health issues. Read BioBill has worked with the physicians of San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center for many years and is now part of our team as a Physical Therapy Assistant and Certified Athletic Trainer. He has worked in the field of Sports Medicine since 1980, starting with the San Diego Padres’ Minor League and working with various teams such as the 1984 Gold Medal Olympic Men’s Volleyball Team, San Diego Sockers, San Diego Gulls, San Diego Spirit, and the Oracle-BMW Team for the America’s Cup Challenge in New Zealand. Bill has also worked with athletes from the high-school level through the elite competitive level designing rehab, training, and nutrition programs.
Denise O’Hagan

Read BioDenise graduated from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT, in 1998 with bachelor’s degrees in psychology as well as human movement and sport science. She received her Athletic Training Certification in 1999 and went on to get her Master of Science in physical therapy at Sacred Heart University in 2001. She moved to San Diego in the fall of 2001 and has been working in outpatient orthopedics since that time. Denise joined San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center in September of 2009 and became Director of Physical Therapy in our Pacific Beach office in 2018. In her free time, she enjoys running, swimming, hiking, biking, and taking her dog to the beach.
Luisa Elizondo

Read BioLuisa graduated from California State University, Fresno with a master’s degree in physical therapy in 1995. She has worked in San Diego in many different settings, but found her passion in the outpatient orthopedic clinic, utilizing manual treatment, exercise, and postural awareness to improve the function and wellbeing of her patients. Luisa began Pilates for her own enjoyment and self-rehab after a back injury. Realizing the value, she became a Stott-certified Pilates instructor in 2007 and utilizes Pilates as the exercise modality with all her clients. In addition to treating physical therapy patients, Luisa teaches a therapeutic Pilates class at SDSM and has a clientele of private Pilates students as well.
Malina Styan

Read BioMalina received her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at San Diego State University in 2005 and her Master of Physical Therapy at California State University, Northridge in 2009. Since then she’s been a practicing outpatient orthopedic Physical Therapist in San Diego. Malina grew up in Hawaii, where she learned the benefits of physical activity through various sports, including tennis, swimming, running, biking, and canoe paddling. With her healing nature and desire to incorporate exercise as a form of medicine, she was drawn toward the field of physical therapy. Malina specializes in a whole-body approach to physical therapy by incorporating functional movement techniques and Pilates principles with manual techniques such as myofascial release, joint mobilizations, and muscle energy. Malina has a passion for Pilates and has been teaching it since 2009. She has been trained in SFMA (Selective Functional Movement Assessment) and incorporates this into her physical therapy treatments. When not working, she loves to enjoy life by being outside with nature and her family.
David Hall

Read BioDavid is certified in the Polestar approach of Pilates training for rehabilitation, and is PMA-certified (“Pilates Method Alliance”). David also received classical Pilates training through Core Conditioning in Los Angeles, CA. He graduated from San Diego State University with a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology and spent five years teaching Human Anatomy and Dissection at San Diego State University and Miramar College, and continues to be a provider of continuing education coursework for students. His research study, “The Effects of Pilates Based Training on Gait and Balance in an Elderly Population” was published in the International Institute of Sport and Human Performance, and was presented at the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) national conference (Seattle, 1999). David worked in SDSU’s Adult Fitness Program conducting maximal exercise testing and developing exercise prescriptions for adults of all fitness levels. His 14+ years and 15,000+ hours of training and experience has provided him with a diverse range of clientele. These collective experiences allow him to bring a strong working knowledge of biomechanics and the musculature of the human body to every exercise session. David actively promotes a safe and effective exercise experience in his studio. He is an avid surfer, and he enjoys playing acoustic guitar and spending time with his family!
Kate Machado

Read BioKate is a Registered Dietitian (RD) who has been helping others make positive changes toward improved nutrition for health and sport performance since 2007. She has been a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) since receiving her Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition from California State University, Long Beach in 2009. That is also where she completed her training to be a dietitian. She received her undergraduate degree from University of California, Berkeley in Nutritional Sciences. Some of her previous professional experience includes working as a Sport Dietitian at the Olympic Training Center, leading weight loss groups at the Cancer Center, and providing nutritional counseling and cooking classes at multiple eating disorder treatment centers. When not working or studying for her PhD, Kate can be found teaching her daughter the joys of cooking, or trail-running with her dogs.
Andrew Stewart

Read BioAndrew received his Doctor of Physical Therapy from Bradley University in 2014 and moved to Denver, CO where he began working as a Physical Therapist. He worked there in a sports and orthopedic clinic, where he was fortunate enough to work with Team USA figure skaters, minor league hockey players, as well as middle school, high school, and collegiate athletes. Andrew moved to San Diego in 2017 and is currently working on the sidelines of the San Diego Legion rugby team with SDSM physicians, and because of these experiences he is now working on becoming a Sports Certified Specialist. He utilizes the most up-to-date evidence-based techniques and methods to decrease down-time during injuries. Andrew spends most of his time out of the clinic with his fiancée and quirky dog, cycling, playing soccer/rugby, weight lifting, traveling, or wishing he was snowboarding – but maybe surfing will fill the void!
Kathryn Spurrell

Read BioKatie graduated from University of California, Davis in 2007 with a B.S. in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior. After working in a laboratory for several years, she decided to return to school to follow her passion for helping others regain function and achieve their goals after injury. Katie received her Doctor of Physical Therapy from University of Southern California in 2013 and has been working in the orthopedic setting ever since. She joined SDSM in April 2018 and is a valuable addition to our physical therapy team. Katie is also a certified weightlifting coach and enjoys helping competitors at her gym improve their form. On the weekends, you can find Katie backpacking and exploring the local trails, as well as spending time with her husband and dog.
Ben Vasko

Read BioBen was born and raised in San Diego, CA. He graduated from Mt. Carmel High School, where he played baseball and football. Afterwards, he continued his academic and baseball career at San Diego State University, where he graduated with both a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology in 2015 and a Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2018. During this time, he worked at Naval Medical Center San Diego in the Movement Retraining Center, where he corrected the mechanics of individuals who had pain associated with running, squatting, and stair management. He also worked in the Comprehensive Combat and Complex Casualty Care (C5) program, providing specialized care for active duty military with limb trauma and amputations. In November 2018, Ben began working as a Physical Therapist at San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center. Ben utilizes the most recent evidence-based research and manual therapy techniques to provide each patient with a personal plan of care to address his or her unique needs. He enjoys providing insight to athletes, young and old, and is a devoted lifelong learner. He plans on becoming a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Sports Certified Specialist. Ben is dedicated to improving the lives of his patients and bettering the City of San Diego as a whole. When he is not at work, Ben is out and about in Ocean Beach, CA, where he lives with his wife. He enjoys surfing, beach workouts, pick-up sports, barbecuing, and fishing.
Katherine Uvelli

Read BioDr. Uvelli is an accomplished family medicine physician who enjoys caring for patients of all ages and backgrounds. She attended Imperial College London School of Medicine, where she received her medical degree in 2012, and completed her residency at University of Washington Valley Medical Center. Dr. Uvelli also holds a BA in French literature from Cornell University and speaks French proficiently. Dr. Uvelli lived in the United Kingdom for 7 years where she worked in health policy, and she later stayed to study medicine before returning to the US for residency training. Prior to working at SDSM, she practiced in a busy clinic in Westfield, New Jersey, where she treated a large range of patients with complex medical conditions. Dr. Uvelli’s goal is to help patients live healthy and fulfilling lives. She believes in the importance of educating patients about their health and aims to incorporate her patients’ values to their health care. Outside of medicine, Dr. Uvelli was a competitive swimmer and water polo player, and now is a passionate long-distance runner.
Tyler Adamson

Read BioDr. Adamson was raised in East Ohio and has always been a Buckeye. His official Buckeye status began when he attended The Ohio State University for undergraduate work. Attending medical school at the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Adamson was able to work with the Virginia Tech athletics programs. Returning to Ohio State for his residency in Family Medicine, he helped provide coverage for the Arnold Schwarzenegger Sports Festival, one of the largest multi-sports competitions in the world. His interest in Sports Medicine and Pediatric Sports Medicine have led him to a Sports Medicine fellowship at UCSD and San Diego Sports Medicine. Dr. Adamson is eager to provide medical coverage for SDSU and learn to be an Aztec (although adamant he will always be a Buckeye as well). He loves to remain active with baseball, softball, kayaking, and spending time with his two dogs.
Alex Bernadett

Read BioDr. Bernadett is completing his primary care sports medicine fellowship at the San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center during the 2019-2020 year. He grew up in Grass Valley, CA and is a proud graduate of Nevada Union High School. He earned a BS degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA and graduated from the Tulane University School of Medicine in 2016. He completed his family medicine residency training at the Swedish Family Medicine First Hill program in 2019. Dr. Bernadett is board certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). Dr. Bernadett has a special interest in sports medicine, musculoskeletal ultrasound, office-based procedures, and providing care in resource limited settings. In his spare time, he enjoys playing and watching sports, keeping up with Major League Baseball (slowly becoming a Padres fan), and spending time with his wife, Kristin.
Nick Schroeder

Read BioNick was born and raised in Reno, NV with the forest and desert as his backyard. He grew up with a passion for anything outdoors and hiked, backpacked, rock climbed and caved all over the west coast. Nick had an active childhood, playing any sport he could including martial arts, baseball, basketball, soccer, skiing/snowboarding, squash, tennis, running and track and field. In 2010 while working in Supply Chain management in San Francisco, Nick got involved in cycling and also completed a 250-hour Yoga Teacher Training course at The Yoga Tree of San Francisco. While traveling the world in 2011 and 2012, he completed a secondary Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh, India where The Beatles studied Transcendental Meditation. Wanting to be involved with movement and health care, he went back to school in 2015 to get his Doctor of Physical Therapy at the University of St. Augustine. Believing that movement is the best medicine for holistic health, Nick enjoys working with individuals from all walks of life for injury prevention, working through injury, and getting that edge for competition!
Andrew Stewart

Read BioAndrew received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Bradley University in 2014 and immediately moved to Denver, Colorado where he began working as a Physical Therapist. While in Denver he worked with Team USA figure skaters, minor league hockey players, and treated skiing and snowboarding injuries. In 2017, he moved to San Diego and began working with SDSM as well as the San Diego Legion Rugby team. He has spent several years working as the sidelines trauma care physical therapist, as well as in the clinic helping athletes recover from concussions, surgery, and overuse injuries. Andrew has spent time intermittently at the Olympic Training Centers providing care for a wide variety of Olympic hopefuls as well as decorated Olympiads. In 2019, he was asked to work for the Chinese Olympic Committee and provide care and training for the Chinese Triathlon Team. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 he returned home before going to the Olympics. Andrew is now at SDSM helping weekend warriors and athletes alike. Outside of the clinic he enjoys weight-lifting, rugby, soccer, surfing, snowboarding, cycling, and travel.
